The Arabic root سنه (s-n-h) carries the core meaning of passing time, change, and the effects that occur over extended periods. In the Quran, it appears in verse 2:259 describing how Allah caused a man to die for a hundred years then resurrected him, with the phrase "lam yatasannah" (did not change/decay) referring to his food and drink remaining unaffected by the passage of time while his donkey's bones had decayed.
