Tafsir (Explanation)
This ayah refers to Laylat al-Qadr (the Night of Power), in which every wise decree and matter is distinguished and separated for the coming year. According to Ibn Kathir and Al-Tabari, Allah determines all affairs of creation during this blessed night, distributing them to the angels who execute these decrees throughout the year. Al-Qurtubi emphasizes that this separation (furqan) means the clarification and specification of all matters that will occur, demonstrating Allah's complete knowledge and sovereignty over all events.
Revelation Context
This ayah appears in the opening section of Surah Ad-Dukhan, which describes the significance of Laylat al-Qadr. The surah was revealed in Mecca and focuses on the revelation of the Quran during this blessed night. The context emphasizes the importance of this night as a time when divine decrees are transmitted to the angels for implementation throughout the year.
