Tafsir (Explanation)
This ayah appears at the end of Surah Ad-Dukhan in the context of the Day of Judgment, where Allah addresses the inhabitants of Hell, saying 'Indeed, this is what you used to doubt.' The ayah refers to the punishment and torment that the disbelievers doubted would come to pass in the Afterlife. Classical scholars like Ibn Kathir and Al-Tabari explain that this is a powerful reminder that what was promised regarding the Hereafter and divine punishment is now a manifest reality before their eyes, serving as a stark vindication of the warnings given by the prophets.
Revelation Context
This ayah is part of Surah Ad-Dukhan, a Meccan surah that emphasizes the reality of the Hereafter and the punishment awaiting those who reject Allah's message. The broader context discusses the certainty of the Day of Judgment and how the disbelievers who mocked and doubted these warnings will witness their fulfillment when they face the consequences of their denial.
Related Hadiths
The theme of this ayah relates to the hadith in Sahih Muslim where the Prophet (peace be upon him) warned about the certainty of the Day of Judgment: 'The Hour will not be established till you see signs before it; the smoke, the Dajjal, the beast, and the sun rising from the west.' This emphasizes the inevitability of what is promised in the Qur'an.

Key Lesson
This ayah teaches believers to have certainty in Allah's promises regarding the Afterlife and to reflect seriously on warnings, for doubting divine truth does not negate its reality—it only delays one's recognition until it is too late. Modern readers should examine their own doubts and align their beliefs with the absolute truth of Allah's word before facing the inevitable consequences.
