Adh-Dhariyat · Ayah 2

فَٱلْحَـٰمِلَـٰتِ وِقْرًا 2

Translations

And the [clouds] carrying a load [of water]

Transliteration

Fal-hamilati wiqran

Tafsir (Explanation)

This ayah refers to the clouds laden with water and weight, which is the first of five oaths by which Allah swears in Surah Adh-Dhariyat. According to classical scholars like Al-Tabari and Ibn Kathir, the 'hamilat' (bearers/carriers) refers to the wind-bearing clouds, and 'wiqr' (burden/weight) refers to the heavy load of water they carry. This oath emphasizes Allah's power in creating and sustaining the natural phenomena that bring life to the earth through rain.

Revelation Context

Surah Adh-Dhariyat is a Meccan surah that addresses the Meccan polytheists' denial of resurrection and the oneness of Allah. This ayah opens a series of oaths (51:1-4) where Allah swears by various natural phenomena as evidence of His existence and power, serving as signs pointing to His dominion over creation.

Related Hadiths

While no hadith directly explains this specific ayah, the theme of clouds as signs of Allah's power is referenced in various hadiths about the creation. The Prophet (peace be upon him) emphasized observing clouds and rain as signs of Allah's mercy (Jami' at-Tirmidhi and other collections contain relevant teachings on natural signs).
