Tafsir (Explanation)

This ayah affirms that all the armies and forces of the heavens and earth belong to Allah alone, emphasizing His absolute sovereignty and control over all creation. Classical scholars like Ibn Kathir and Al-Tabari note this verse serves as a reminder that victory comes not from material numbers or strength, but from Allah's will and divine support, which follows immediately after the promise of conquest in verse 48:1. The mention of Allah being 'Mighty (Aziz) and Wise (Hakim)' underscores that His dominion is both powerful and perfectly ordered according to divine wisdom.

Revelation Context

This ayah appears in Surah Al-Fath, which was revealed after the Treaty of Hudaybiyyah (6 AH), a pivotal moment when the Muslims agreed to a peace treaty that initially seemed like a setback but proved to be a strategic victory. The surah's broader context addresses the believers' uncertainty about this treaty, reassuring them that Allah had decreed victory. This particular verse reinforces that despite apparent material disadvantages, the believers should trust in Allah's infinite armies and power.

Related Hadiths

The Prophet (ﷺ) said: 'The greatest supplication is the supplication for rain, and the best time for supplication is in the middle of Rajab' (Sunan Ibn Majah). More directly, in Sahih Bukhari, the Prophet emphasized that victory comes from Allah alone, not from numbers: 'How often a small group defeats a large group by Allah's permission.'
