Tafsir (Explanation)
Al-Haqqah (The Reality/The Inevitable Truth) refers to the Day of Judgment, which is an inevitable and absolute certainty that will surely come to pass. Classical scholars like Ibn Kathir and Al-Tabari interpret this opening as Allah establishing the undeniable reality of the Last Day, emphasizing its inevitability and the certainty of resurrection. This ayah serves as a powerful introduction to the surah's theme of the Day of Judgment and divine accountability.
Revelation Context
Surah Al-Haqqah is a Meccan surah revealed during the early period of Islam when the disbelievers of Makkah denied the resurrection and the Day of Judgment. This opening ayah directly confronts their denial by asserting the absolute reality and inevitability of these events, setting the tone for the surah's detailed descriptions of the Day of Judgment.
Related Hadiths
The Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) said: 'Whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day should speak good or keep silent' (Sahih Bukhari 6018), which relates to the accountability emphasized by the reality of the Day of Judgment. Additionally, 'The Hour will be established and none will believe in it except the one who did not believe before' (Sunan An-Nasa'i 4734) connects to warnings about the certainty of this day.
