Tafsir (Explanation)
This ayah affirms that all sovereignty and dominion of the heavens and earth belong exclusively to Allah, establishing His absolute authority over all creation. On the Day of Judgment when the Hour is established, those who pursued falsehood and rejected the truth will suffer great loss—losing their worldly pursuits, their excuses, and their eternal salvation. Classical scholars like Al-Qurtubi emphasize that this verse serves as both a warning to the disbelievers and a consolation to the believers that ultimate justice rests with Allah alone.
Revelation Context
Surah Al-Jathiyah is a Meccan surah primarily concerned with refuting polytheism and establishing monotheistic doctrine. This verse appears near the end of the surah as a conclusive statement reinforcing Allah's supreme dominion and the inevitable consequences on the Day of Judgment for those who persist in falsehood.
Related Hadiths
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: 'The best supplication is asking for forgiveness, and the best provision is to have taqwa (God-consciousness)' (Jami' at-Tirmidhi). While not directly about this ayah, it relates to avoiding loss through conscious adherence to truth.

Key Lesson
This ayah reminds us that earthly power and status are temporary illusions—true dominion belongs only to Allah, and all will face accountability on the Day of Judgment. For believers, this should strengthen conviction in Allah's justice and encourage steadfastness in truth, knowing that ultimate victory belongs to those who follow divine guidance.
