وَأَنَّا لَمَسْنَا ٱلسَّمَآءَ فَوَجَدْنَـٰهَا مُلِئَتْ حَرَسًا شَدِيدًا وَشُهُبًا 8
Translations
And we have sought [to reach] the heaven but found it filled with powerful guards and burning flames.
Transliteration
Wa-anna lamastna al-sama'a fa-wajadnaha muli'at harasan shadidan wa-shuhuba
Tafsir (Explanation)
The jinn are describing their attempt to reach the heavens to eavesdrop on the angels' conversations (as mentioned in verse 72:9), only to discover that the sky is now guarded by fierce angels and shooting stars (meteors). Classical scholars like Ibn Kathir and Al-Tabari explain that this refers to the reinforcement of heaven's security after the Prophet Muhammad's mission began, preventing the jinn from obtaining knowledge of the unseen. The 'harsh guards' (harasan shadidan) and 'meteors' (shuhuba) symbolize Allah's protection of divine secrets from those who would misuse such knowledge.

حَتَّىٰٓ إِذَا رَأَوْا۟ مَا يُوعَدُونَ فَسَيَعْلَمُونَ مَنْ أَضْعَفُ نَاصِرًا وَأَقَلُّ عَدَدًا
[The disbelievers continue] until, when they see that which they are promised, then they will know who is weaker in helpers and less in number.
وَأَلَّوِ ٱسْتَقَـٰمُوا۟ عَلَى ٱلطَّرِيقَةِ لَأَسْقَيْنَـٰهُم مَّآءً غَدَقًا
And [Allāh revealed] that if they had remained straight on the way, We would have given them abundant rain [i.e., provision].
