Tafsir (Explanation)
Allah assures Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) that He is fully capable of showing him the punishment He has promised to the disbelievers in this life or the next. This ayah comes as a reassurance to the Prophet during the trials of preaching, affirming that Divine justice will inevitably be executed against those who reject the message. Classical scholars like Ibn Kathir and Al-Tabari emphasize this as a consolation to the Prophet, reminding him that despite current opposition, Allah's promises are certain and His power is absolute.
Revelation Context
This ayah appears in the Meccan period of Surah Al-Mu'minun, which addresses the disbelievers' mockery and rejection of the Prophet's message. The broader context of Surah 23 deals with characteristics of true believers and warnings to the rejectors, and this particular verse serves to strengthen the Prophet's resolve by reassuring him of Allah's ultimate power and the inevitable fulfillment of His threats against the stubborn disbelievers.
Related Hadiths
While no hadith directly quotes this verse, Sahih Muslim contains numerous hadiths about the certainty of Allah's punishment for disbelievers and His power over all things, such as hadiths on the Day of Judgment and divine retribution. The theme aligns with the general prophetic teachings about Allah's absolute power and justice.
