Tafsir (Explanation)
This ayah refers to the person whose good deeds are light (insufficient) when weighed on the Scales of Judgment on the Day of Resurrection. According to Ibn Kathir and Al-Qurtubi, this describes those whose righteous actions are outweighed by their sins and shortcomings. The lightness of the scales signifies spiritual poverty and distance from Allah's guidance, indicating that such a person will face severe punishment in the afterlife.
Revelation Context
This ayah is part of Surah Al-Qari'ah, a Meccan surah describing the Day of Judgment and its terrifying events. It comes after the description of the weighing of deeds (verses 6-7) and directly contrasts with the previous ayah about those whose scales are heavy with good deeds, emphasizing the gravity of divine accountability on the Day of Resurrection.
Related Hadiths
The Prophet (ﷺ) said: 'The most beloved deeds to Allah are the most consistent, even if they are small' (Sunan Ibn Majah). Additionally, the hadith in Sahih Bukhari regarding the scales (Mizan) on the Day of Judgment illustrates how deeds are measured, relating to the weighing mentioned in this ayah.

This ayah serves as a powerful reminder that the value of our deeds lies not in quantity but in sincerity and consistency. Believers should strive to ensure their actions are substantive and rooted in genuine faith, as superficial or insincere deeds will carry no weight on the Day of Judgment.
