Tafsir (Explanation)
This ayah emphasizes that Allah granted Prophet Musa (Moses) the Torah after destroying the earlier generations (the nations before him) as a divine mercy and guidance for humanity, containing clear signs (baṣā'ir) for people to understand and heed. According to Ibn Kathir and Al-Qurtubi, the Torah was sent as a comprehensive guide containing proofs, wisdom, and merciful provisions intended to make people reflect and remember Allah's guidance. The phrase 'after destroying the earlier generations' underscores the consequences of rejecting divine messengers, making the gift of the Torah a second chance for mankind to follow the straight path.
Revelation Context
This ayah appears in Surah Al-Qasas, which recounts the detailed story of Prophet Musa's life and mission. It contextualizes the giving of the Torah within the broader narrative of divine justice—showing how earlier peoples were destroyed for their rejection of truth, while subsequent generations received the written scripture as a mercy and clear guidance. The surah emphasizes the continuity of Allah's message through His messengers.
