Translations

And made [therein] a burning lamp

Transliteration

Wa ja'alna sirajan wahhajan

Tafsir (Explanation)

This ayah refers to Allah creating the sun as a blazing, brightly shining lamp. The word 'siraj' (سِرَاج) means lamp or torch, while 'wahhaj' (وَهَّاج) means intensely bright, blazing, or shining with great radiance. Classical scholars like Ibn Kathir and Al-Tabari interpret this as Allah's designation of the sun as the primary source of light and warmth for all creation on earth, emphasizing both its physical function and its role as a sign of divine power and wisdom.

Revelation Context

This ayah appears in Surah An-Naba, a Meccan chapter that focuses on the signs of Allah's creation and the Day of Judgment. The surah presents a series of divine favors and cosmic phenomena as evidence of Allah's power and the truth of the resurrection. This particular verse is part of a passage describing the creation of natural celestial bodies (verses 12-16) that sustain life on earth.

Related Hadiths

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: 'The sun and the moon are two of the signs of Allah. They do not eclipse on account of the death or life of anyone. When you see them, invoke Allah and pray.' (Sahih Bukhari 1054). This hadith connects the sun's role as a divine sign to its importance in Islamic worship and remembrance.
