وَخَلَقَ ٱلْجَآنَّ مِن مَّارِجٍ مِّن نَّارٍ 15
Translations
And He created the jinn from a smokeless flame of fire.
Transliteration
Wa khalaqa al-janna min marij min nar
Tafsir (Explanation)
Allah created the jinn from a smokeless flame of fire (marij min nar). Classical scholars like Ibn Kathir and Al-Tabari explain that 'marij' refers to a mixture or flame of fire without smoke, distinguishing the jinn's creation from that of humans (created from clay) and angels (created from light). This ayah emphasizes the jinn as a distinct creation with their own nature and essence, existing in a realm parallel to humanity but made from a different substance.
Revelation Context
This ayah appears in Surah Ar-Rahman, a Medinan chapter that celebrates Allah's blessings and creation. The broader context of the surah discusses various creations and divine favors, and this specific ayah is part of a sequence mentioning the creation of humans and jinn as separate beings with different natures, emphasizing the diversity of Allah's creation.
Related Hadiths
Sahih Muslim reports from Aisha that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: 'The angels are created from light, the jinn are created from fire, and Adam's children are created from what you have been told (earth/clay).' This hadith directly corroborates the Quranic statement about jinn's creation from fire.
