Ash-Sharh · Ayah 8

وَإِلَىٰ رَبِّكَ فَٱرْغَب 8

Translations

And to your Lord direct [your] longing.

Transliteration

Wa-ilā rabbika farghab

Tafsir (Explanation)

This ayah commands the Prophet (peace be upon him) to turn in supplication and longing desire exclusively toward his Lord. Classical scholars like Ibn Kathir and Al-Qurtubi explain that 'farghab' (فارغب) means to earnestly desire, seek, and turn one's heart in devotion toward Allah alone, emphasizing complete reliance on Him rather than on worldly matters or the approval of people. The ayah concludes Surah Ash-Sharh with a directive to anchor all hopes, desires, and aspirations in the Divine presence.

Revelation Context

Surah Ash-Sharh was revealed in Mecca during a period when the Prophet faced considerable opposition and hardship. After consoling him with assurances that Allah had expanded his breast and removed his burden (94:1-7), this final verse directs him—and by extension all believers—to channel all longing and desire toward Allah as the ultimate source of relief and fulfillment. This contextualizes the surah's message of divine comfort within the framework of sincere devotion.

Related Hadiths

The concept is reinforced in a hadith in Sahih Bukhari where the Prophet said, 'Whoever makes the Hereafter his goal, Allah will suffice him in his worldly affairs.' Additionally, Sunan At-Tirmidhi records that reliance upon Allah (tawakkul) combined with sincere supplication is among the greatest means of receiving divine aid.
