They said, "If you do not desist, O Lot, you will surely be of those evicted."

Transliteration

Qalū la-in lam tanthahi yā Lūṭu la-takūnanna mina al-mukhrajīn

Tafsir (Explanation)

The people of Lot threatened him, saying that if he did not cease his preaching against their immoral practices, they would expel him from their city. This ayah illustrates the hostile response of those engaged in sin when confronted with divine guidance, and Lot's steadfastness in delivering the message despite threats. Classical scholars like Ibn Kathir emphasize that this threat of expulsion was the people's attempt to silence the truth, yet Lot remained firm in his mission as a messenger of Allah.

Revelation Context

This ayah occurs within the narrative of Prophet Lot in Surah Ash-Shu'ara, which recounts the stories of various messengers and their peoples' rejection. The broader context describes how the people of Sodom engaged in abominable acts and violently rejected Lot's warnings, leading to their eventual destruction—a theme running throughout the surah that demonstrates the consequences of rejecting divine messengers.

Related Hadiths

The story of Lot is referenced in multiple ahadith regarding the severity of the sin of homosexuality and the punishment that befell his people. See Sunan Ibn Majah and Sunan At-Tirmidhi regarding the account of the people of Lot's destruction as a warning against immoral behavior.

Key Lesson

Believers should expect resistance when standing for truth and righteousness, but must remain unwavering in their conviction like the prophets did. The ayah teaches that popularity and acceptance by society are not measures of truth; rather, adherence to Allah's guidance despite social pressure is the true marker of faith.
