Tafsir (Explanation)

The disbelievers respond to Prophet Ibrahim's call to monotheism by openly declaring their commitment to idolatry, stating they worship idols and remain devoted to them. This ayah illustrates the stubbornness and willful blindness of those who rejected the truth, prioritizing inherited practices over rational reflection. Classical scholars like Ibn Kathir note this demonstrates how people cling to falsehood even when confronted with clear evidence of divine oneness.

Revelation Context

This ayah occurs within the narrative of Prophet Ibrahim's confrontation with his people regarding their idolatry (26:70-77). The broader context of Surah Ash-Shu'ara is Meccan, addressing the polytheists of Mecca who similarly rejected monotheism. The passage reflects the dialogue between Ibrahim and his community, showing their defiant response to his call away from idol worship.

Related Hadiths

Sahih Bukhari (3445): The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) mentioned that people follow the religion of their fathers, echoing the theme of inherited disbelief seen in this ayah. Additionally, Surah Ash-Shu'ara 26:74 continues with 'They said, We found our fathers upon a religion, and we are guided by their footsteps,' further illustrating this theme of blind following.
