Tafsir (Explanation)
This ayah refers to how Allah made the destroyed nations (particularly the people of 'Ād and Thamūd mentioned in the preceding verses) predecessors and examples for later generations. According to Ibn Kathir and Al-Tabari, this destruction served as a clear warning and lesson for those who came after them, demonstrating the consequences of rejecting Allah's messengers and persisting in disbelief and arrogance.
Revelation Context
This ayah appears in the context of Surah Az-Zukhruf, which discusses the fate of those who rejected the messengers and clung to falsehood. The preceding verses describe how Allah destroyed the people of 'Ād and Thamūd for their rejection of their prophets (Hūd and Sālih respectively), and this ayah concludes that lesson by emphasizing the universal significance of their destruction as a timeless warning.
Related Hadiths
The concept relates to hadith in Sahih Muslim where the Prophet (ﷺ) said: 'The best of you are those of my generation, then those who follow them, then those who follow them' - emphasizing how predecessors set examples for those who come after. Additionally, Surah Al-Furqān 25:19 uses similar language about making earlier people examples (mathal).

Key Lesson
The destruction of past civilizations that rejected truth is not merely historical trivia but serves as a timeless admonition for every generation. Believers should reflect on these precedents and learn from others' mistakes rather than repeating the same patterns of arrogance and denial.
