Tafsir (Explanation)
This ayah affirms that all creation—whether in the heavens, earth, or between them—shall be gathered and presented before Allah on the Day of Judgment. According to Ibn Kathir and Al-Tabari, this verse emphasizes the certainty of resurrection and Allah's complete knowledge and control over all beings, refuting the disbelievers' denial of the Hereafter. The phrase 'lammā jamīʿun' (all together) underscores the universality of this gathering, leaving no exception for any creature.
Revelation Context
This ayah appears in the Meccan surah Ya-Sin, which is primarily concerned with establishing the reality of resurrection and divine power against Meccan polytheists who mocked the concept of afterlife. It serves as a response to those who denied bodily resurrection and the final reckoning, a central theme throughout this surah.
Related Hadiths
The Prophet (ﷺ) said: 'The Day of Judgment will not be established until people are gathered, some standing and some sitting' (a thematic reference found in various hadith collections). Additionally, Surah Ya-Sin 36:51-52 is supported by hadiths in Sahih Bukhari describing the trumpet blast and the gathering of humanity.
