Tafsir (Explanation)

This phrase, occurring at the end of Ayah 36:4, refers to the Quran being a guidance upon the Straight Path—the way of monotheism and righteous conduct. Classical scholars like Al-Tabari and Ibn Kathir explain that 'al-sirat al-mustaqim' (the Straight Path) encompasses adherence to Islamic teachings and the Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), contrasting it with deviation and misguidance.

Revelation Context

Surah Ya-Sin, revealed in Mecca during the early Islamic period, emphasizes the Quran's miraculous nature and its role as divine guidance. This ayah appears within the opening verses that introduce the Quran as a clear sign and reminder for those who believe. It reinforces the core Meccan message that the Quran itself is the criterion between right and wrong.

Related Hadiths

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: 'I have left you upon a clear path, its night is like its day; none deviates from it except one who is destroyed.' (Sunan Ibn Majah 43). Additionally, in Surah Al-Fatiha 1:6, believers are instructed to pray: 'Guide us to the Straight Path,' which complements this ayah's theme.
