The Arabic root صدي (s-d-y) carries the core meaning of echoing, reverberating sound, or producing noise without meaningful content. In the Quran, it appears most notably in Surah Al-Anfal (8:35) describing the hollow, meaningless acts of the disbelievers at the Kaaba—their prayer being nothing but whistling (mukaa') and clapping (tasdiya)—contrasting empty ritualistic noise with sincere worship.
