Tafsir (Explanation)

This ayah describes the drink of the inhabitants of Hellfire as being like boiling water (hamīm). Classical scholars such as Ibn Kathir and Al-Qurtubi explain that this boiling liquid will be poured over the bodies and into the bellies of the damned, causing extreme suffering. The comparison to 'ghallī' (boiling or seething) emphasizes the intensity of heat and the tortuous nature of this punishment in the afterlife.

Revelation Context

This ayah appears in Surah Ad-Dukhan, a Meccan chapter that vividly describes the scenes of the Day of Judgment and the punishments of Hell. The surah's broader context focuses on warning the disbelievers about the consequences of rejecting faith, and this particular verse is part of a passage describing the specific torments awaiting those in Hell.

Related Hadiths

Additionally, in Sahih Muslim, there are descriptions of how the fire of Hell is seventy times hotter than the fire of this world, which contextualizes the severity of such punishments.
