فَأَمَّا ثَمُودُ فَأُهْلِكُوا۟ بِٱلطَّاغِيَةِ 5
Translations
So as for Thamūd, they were destroyed by the overpowering [blast].
Transliteration
Fa-amma thumudu fa-uhliku bi-al-taghiyah
Tafsir (Explanation)
This ayah refers to the destruction of the people of Thamud, who were annihilated by a mighty blast or sound (al-sayhah). Classical scholars like Ibn Kathir and Al-Tabari interpret 'al-taghiyah' (the transgression/overwhelming blast) as the deafening cry or earthquake that destroyed them due to their rejection of the prophet Salih and their arrogance in defying Allah's signs. And if [as much as] a whiff of the punishment of your Lord should touch them, they would surely say, "O woe to us! Indeed, we have been wrongdoers."
وَكَمْ أَهْلَكْنَا مِن قَرْيَةٍۭ بَطِرَتْ مَعِيشَتَهَا ۖ فَتِلْكَ مَسَـٰكِنُهُمْ لَمْ تُسْكَن مِّنۢ بَعْدِهِمْ إِلَّا قَلِيلًا ۖ وَكُنَّا نَحْنُ ٱلْوَٰرِثِينَ
And how many a city have We destroyed that was insolent in its [way of] living, and those are their dwellings which have not been inhabited after them except briefly. And it is We who were the inheritors.
ثُمَّ نُتْبِعُهُمُ ٱلْـَٔاخِرِينَ
Then We will follow them with the later ones.
