Adh-Dhariyat · Ayah 14

ذُوقُوا۟ فِتْنَتَكُمْ هَـٰذَا ٱلَّذِى كُنتُم بِهِۦ تَسْتَعْجِلُونَ 14

Translations

[And will be told], "Taste your torment. This is that for which you were impatient."

Transliteration

Dhooqoo fitnatakum haadha alladhee kuntum bihi tastajiloon

Tafsir (Explanation)

This ayah commands the inhabitants of Hell to taste their punishment—the very trial (fitnah) they eagerly sought and hastened towards in the worldly life. Classical scholars like Ibn Kathir and Al-Qurtubi interpret this as Allah's address to those who mocked the signs of Allah and demanded swift punishment, now experiencing the consequence of their arrogance and disbelief. The verse emphasizes the justice of divine retribution: they sought hastiness in rejecting truth, so they taste hastiness in torment.

Revelation Context

Surah Adh-Dhariyat addresses the realities of the Day of Judgment and the fate of believers and disbelievers. This ayah appears within a passage describing the punishment of those in Hell, providing stark contrast to the reward of the righteous mentioned earlier in the surah. It reflects the Meccan context where disbelievers were challenged about their denial of the afterlife.

Related Hadiths

The Prophet (ﷺ) said in Sahih Muslim: 'The least punishment of the people of Hell is that they will have shoes of fire from which their brains will boil.' This relates thematically to the tasting of punishment. Additionally, various hadiths about those who mocked Allah's messengers and demanded swift punishment (as mentioned in 8:32) connect to this ayah's theme.

Key Lesson

This ayah serves as a solemn reminder that mockery of divine signs and impatience with faith have eternal consequences; believers should maintain hope in Allah's mercy while fearing His justice, and recognize that hastening toward sin and rejection of truth ultimately leads to hastening toward torment.
