Tafsir (Explanation)

In this ayah, the Prophet (ﷺ) is commanded to proclaim that Allah is the Greatest Witness between himself and his people, and that the Qur'an has been revealed to warn both those who hear it and those to whom it reaches. He then confronts the Meccan polytheists by asking if they truly believe in other gods alongside Allah, to which he categorically denies bearing witness to shirk and affirms absolute monotheism. Classical scholars like Ibn Kathir emphasize that this verse establishes Allah's supreme testimony as evidence of His Oneness and the truthfulness of the Qur'an's message.

Revelation Context

This ayah is part of Surah Al-An'am (a Meccan surah revealed during the early to middle Meccan period) and addresses the core dispute between the Prophet and the polytheists of Mecca regarding tawhīd (monotheism). The ayah comes within a section where the Prophet is instructed to present clear arguments against idolatry and to assert his disassociation from the shirk of his people.
