Translations
And We made the sky a protected ceiling, but they, from its signs, are turning away.
Transliteration
Wa ja'alna as-sama'a saqfan mahfuzan wa hum 'an ayatiha mu'ridun
Tafsir (Explanation)
Allah has made the sky a protected ceiling (roof) that guards the earth and its inhabitants from harmful cosmic rays, meteors, and the void of space, yet people turn away from recognizing this sign. Classical scholars like Ibn Kathir and Al-Tabari emphasize that 'mahfuzan' (protected/guarded) refers to the sky's role as a barrier maintaining life's conditions on earth, while simultaneously demonstrating mankind's ingratitude by ignoring such evident divine signs. Al-Qurtubi notes that despite the sky's evident preservation of life, humans remain heedless of the divine wisdom manifest in creation.
Revelation Context
This ayah is part of Surah Al-Anbya (Meccan), which extensively catalogs Allah's signs in creation to convince the polytheists of Mecca of divine oneness and power. The surah emphasizes how creation bears witness to Allah's majesty, yet the disbelievers remain unmoved—establishing a recurring theme of miraculous signs paired with human negligence and rejection.
Related Hadiths
The Prophet (ﷺ) said: 'The example of the moon and the sun is like the example of two eyes in the sky.' (Related to recognizing creation's signs). Additionally, 'Seven heavens and seven earths, each one separated from the other' (Sunan Ibn Majah) relates to the structural protection of the cosmic order mentioned here.
