Tafsir (Explanation)
This ayah describes the blessings Allah bestowed upon Ibrahim (Abraham), specifically mentioning the gift of his sons Ishaq (Isaac) and Ya'qub (Jacob), and that He placed prophecy and divine scripture within his progeny. According to Ibn Kathir and Al-Tabari, this refers to the prophetic lineage that continued through Ibrahim's descendants, including Musa, Isa, and Muhammad (upon them all be peace). The ayah emphasizes that Ibrahim received both worldly honor and will be among the righteous in the Hereafter—a comprehensive reward for his steadfastness and faith.
Revelation Context
This ayah appears in Surah Al-'Ankabut, a Meccan chapter that discusses various prophets and their trials. The broader context discusses Ibrahim's struggle against his people's idolatry and his unwavering faith; this verse serves as a divine affirmation of his exceptional status and the continuation of his prophetic legacy through his righteous descendants.
Related Hadiths
The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: 'The best of people are those of my generation, then those who come after them, then those who come after them' (Sahih Bukhari 3456). Additionally, there are hadiths affirming Ibrahim as 'Khalilullah' (the Friend of Allah) and his elevated station among prophets (Sahih Bukhari 3372).
