Tafsir (Explanation)
This ayah commands believers to listen attentively and remain silent when the Qur'an is being recited, with the hope of receiving Allah's mercy. Classical scholars like Ibn Kathir and Al-Qurtubi emphasize that this instruction applies whether the Qur'an is recited in prayer or otherwise, and that proper listening with presence of heart is essential for understanding Allah's guidance. The combination of listening (istima') and silence (insat) indicates a complete focus on comprehending the divine message without distraction or interruption.
Revelation Context
This ayah appears in the context of Surah Al-A'raf, which was revealed in Mecca and addresses foundational principles of Islamic faith and conduct. The ayah is positioned within a section emphasizing obedience to Allah and respect for His revelations, establishing a code of etiquette for the believers' interaction with the Qur'an during a time when the Prophet Muhammad was actively reciting and teaching it to the community.
Related Hadiths
The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: 'Whoever listens to one ayah from the Book of Allah, it will be written for him as a light on the Day of Judgment' (reported in various hadith collections with similar meanings). Additionally, there are hadith traditions emphasizing silence during Qur'anic recitation in prayer, found in Sahih Bukhari and Sahih Muslim.
