Al-Fatihah · Ayah 3

Translations

The Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful,

Transliteration

Ar-Rahmān ar-Rahīm

Tafsir (Explanation)

These two divine names emphasize Allah's infinite mercy and compassion. Ar-Rahmān (The Most Merciful) denotes the vastness and encompassing nature of Allah's mercy toward all creation, while ar-Rahīm (The Merciful) emphasizes His particular and continuous mercy toward the believers. Classical scholars like Al-Qurtubi note that these names encapsulate Allah's fundamental attribute of mercy, which frames the entire message of the Qur'an and sets the tone for humanity's relationship with their Lord.

Revelation Context

As part of the opening chapter (Surah Al-Fatihah), which is recited in every unit of prayer, these attributes are presented immediately after the declaration of Allah's lordship (Bismillah and Al-Hamdu lillahi rabbi al-'ālamīn). This positioning establishes that the Lord of all worlds is fundamentally characterized by mercy, providing spiritual comfort and hope to believers seeking guidance and forgiveness.

Related Hadiths

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: 'Indeed, Allah created mercy with one hundred parts, and He withheld with Him ninety-nine parts, and sent down in His creation one part' (Sahih Muslim 2218). Additionally, 'My mercy encompasses all things' (Qur'an 7:156) is frequently cited in hadith commentary to illustrate the scope of these divine attributes.

Key Lesson

These opening names remind believers that approaching Allah should be rooted in hope rather than fear alone, as His mercy precedes His wrath. In daily life, understanding Allah as ar-Rahmān and ar-Rahīm encourages Muslims to extend compassion to others and trust in divine forgiveness, transforming how they relate to both their Creator and creation.

2:143Al-Baqarah

And thus We have made you a median [i.e., just] community that you will be witnesses over the people and the Messenger will be a witness over you. And We did not make the qiblah which you used to face except that We might make evident who would follow the Messenger from who would turn back on his heels. And indeed, it is difficult except for those whom Allāh has guided. And never would Allāh have caused you to lose your faith [i.e., your previous prayers]. Indeed Allāh is, to the people, Kind and Merciful.

Except for those who repent, believe and do righteous work. For them Allāh will replace their evil deeds with good. And ever is Allāh Forgiving and Merciful.
