Tafsir (Explanation)
This ayah presents the sending of winds as one of Allah's signs, highlighting their multiple purposes: they bring glad tidings of mercy (rain), enable ships to sail by Allah's command, and allow humanity to seek His provision through trade and commerce. Classical scholars like Ibn Kathir and Al-Qurtubi emphasize that these winds demonstrate Allah's wisdom and power, serving both physical and spiritual functions as means of sustenance and signs calling people to gratitude and recognition of divine mercy.
Revelation Context
This ayah appears in Surah Ar-Rum (The Romans), a Meccan surah that focuses on signs of Allah's existence and power in creation. The context addresses the polytheists of Mecca, presenting observable natural phenomena—particularly winds and maritime trade—as evidence of divine control and wisdom. These practical examples were meant to guide people toward monotheism and gratitude.
Related Hadiths
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said regarding winds: 'The wind is from the treasuries of mercy' (Jami' at-Tirmidhi). Additionally, there are hadiths emphasizing the blessings of trade and seeking provision through lawful means, which connects to the maritime commerce enabled by these winds.
