Tafsir (Explanation)
The angels addressing Lot (peace be upon him) declare that they have come to him with the truth regarding their mission to destroy the people of Sodom, and affirm that they are truthful messengers. According to Ibn Kathir and Al-Tabari, this statement emphasizes the certainty and reliability of the divine message being delivered, assuring Lot that what they have informed him of will surely come to pass. The ayah underscores the credibility of the angels as bearers of Allah's will and the inevitability of divine punishment for those who persist in transgression.
Revelation Context
This ayah occurs within the narrative of Lot's encounter with the angels (messengers) who visited him to inform him of the impending destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah. The context shows the angels reassuring Lot of their truthfulness after he expressed concern about their ability to protect themselves from the corrupt people of his town. This is part of the broader Meccan surah's discussion of divine punishment for those who reject Allah's messengers.
Related Hadiths
The hadith in Sahih Muslim regarding the angels' characteristics and their truthfulness in conveying divine messages supports the theme of angelic reliability. Additionally, hadiths about the destruction of the people of Lot in Sahih Bukhari (Kitab Bad' al-Khalq) relate to the fulfillment of this promise.
