كَمَآ أَنزَلْنَا عَلَى ٱلْمُقْتَسِمِينَ 90
Translations
Just as We had revealed [scriptures] to the separators
Transliteration
Kamā anzalnā 'alā al-muqtasimīn
Tafsir (Explanation)
This ayah refers to Allah's punishment upon those who divided the Qur'an into parts, accepting some verses while rejecting others—a reference to the mushrikīn (polytheists) of Mecca who selectively believed in certain aspects of the revelation. Classical scholars like Ibn Kathir and Al-Tabari interpret 'al-muqtasimīn' (those who divide/partition) as those who made arbitrary distinctions in their faith, accepting the parts that suited their desires while rejecting divine guidance. فَجَعَلْنَا عَـٰلِيَهَا سَافِلَهَا وَأَمْطَرْنَا عَلَيْهِمْ حِجَارَةً مِّن سِجِّيلٍ
And We made the highest part [of the city] its lowest and rained upon them stones of hard clay.
قَالَ قَدْ وَقَعَ عَلَيْكُم مِّن رَّبِّكُمْ رِجْسٌ وَغَضَبٌ ۖ أَتُجَـٰدِلُونَنِى فِىٓ أَسْمَآءٍ سَمَّيْتُمُوهَآ أَنتُمْ وَءَابَآؤُكُم مَّا نَزَّلَ ٱللَّهُ بِهَا مِن سُلْطَـٰنٍ ۚ فَٱنتَظِرُوٓا۟ إِنِّى مَعَكُم مِّنَ ٱلْمُنتَظِرِينَ
[Hūd] said, "Already have defilement and anger fallen upon you from your Lord. Do you dispute with me concerning [mere] names you have named them, you and your fathers, for which Allāh has not sent down any authority? Then wait; indeed, I am with you among those who wait."
سَرَابِيلُهُم مِّن قَطِرَانٍ وَتَغْشَىٰ وُجُوهَهُمُ ٱلنَّارُ
Their garments of liquid pitch and their faces covered by the Fire
