[Moses] said, "You have already known that none has sent down these [signs] except the Lord of the heavens and the earth as evidence, and indeed I think, O Pharaoh, that you are destroyed."

Transliteration

Qāla laqad 'alimta mā anzala hā'ulā'i illā Rabbu as-samāwāti wa-al-'arḍi basā'ira wa-innī la-aẓunnu ka yā Fir'awnu mathbūrā

Tafsir (Explanation)

Musa (Moses) responds to Pharaoh's accusations by affirming that only Allah, the Lord of the heavens and earth, has sent down these miracles (the signs) as clear proofs and guidance. Musa then declares his conviction that Pharaoh is destined for destruction (mathbūr). Classical scholars like Ibn Kathir and Al-Qurtubi interpret this as Musa's confident assertion of divine truth and his warning to Pharaoh, emphasizing the futility of opposing Allah's signs and the inevitable doom of those who reject faith.

Revelation Context

This ayah occurs within the narrative of Musa and Fir'awn (Pharaoh) in Surah Al-Isra, which recounts the historical confrontation between the Prophet and Pharaoh. The context depicts Musa's steadfast response to Pharaoh's denial and mockery of the miracles, reaffirming the divine origin of these signs and warning of Pharaoh's impending ruin—a theme central to several Meccan surahs dealing with rejection of divine truth.

Related Hadiths

While no hadith directly quotes this ayah, the theme relates to Hadith Qudsi where Allah emphasizes the consequences of rejecting His signs. Additionally, the concept of 'basā'ir' (clear proofs) resonates with Surah An-Nur 43 and Islamic teachings on the clarity of divine guidance, as discussed in various collections including Sahih Muslim on the signs of Allah.

Key Lesson

This ayah teaches us to remain firm in our conviction of divine truth and to recognize that clear signs of Allah's guidance are always available to those willing to see them. It serves as a timeless reminder that rejection of truth, no matter how evident, ultimately leads to destruction, and that our reliance should be solely on Allah's wisdom rather than on the approval of those who deny His signs.
