Tafsir (Explanation)

This ayah asserts that the Quran is a revelation (tanzīl) from Allah, the Mighty (Al-Aziz) and the Wise (Al-Hakīm). According to classical scholars like Ibn Kathir and Al-Tabari, this opening declaration serves to establish the divine origin and perfection of the Quranic text, emphasizing that its authority comes from Allah's supreme power and infinite wisdom, not from human composition. The attributes of 'Aziz (mighty/invincible) and Hakīm (wise) provide assurance that the Quran is free from error and contradiction, perfectly suited to guide humanity.

Revelation Context

Surah Al-Jathiyah is a Meccan surah, revealed during the period when the Prophet Muhammad faced intense opposition from the Quraysh who rejected the message of monotheism. This ayah opens the surah by directly affirming the Quranic revelation's divine source, serving as a response to those who disputed the Quran's authenticity and attributed it to human invention.
