Al-Jathiyah · Ayah 1

حمٓ 1

Translations

Ḥā, Meem.

Transliteration

Ha-Meem

Tafsir (Explanation)

This ayah consists of the isolated letters (Huruf Muqatta'at) 'Ha' and 'Meem,' which appear at the beginning of several surahs in the Quran. Classical scholars like Al-Tabari and Ibn Kathir note that the precise meanings of these letters remain among the secrets of Allah (Allahu A'lam), though they serve to draw attention and demonstrate the inimitable nature of the Quranic text. These letters affirm that the Quran, despite using the same Arabic alphabet as the people, cannot be replicated or matched in its eloquence and divine origin.

Revelation Context

This opening appears at the start of Surah Al-Jathiyah, a Meccan surah revealed during the early period of Islam. The surah addresses the stubbornness of those who rejected faith and serves as a reminder of divine signs and accountability. The isolated letters function as an attention-grabbing device to prepare the listener for the profound message that follows regarding resurrection, divine wisdom, and human responsibility.

Related Hadiths

While no specific hadith directly explains these isolated letters, Anas ibn Malik reported that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said regarding similar isolated letters: 'The Quran was revealed with difficulty, letter by letter' (referenced in various tafsir works). This emphasizes the deliberate, measured revelation of the Quranic text.

Key Lesson

The isolated letters remind us that the Quran's miraculous nature lies not merely in its words but in a divine quality that transcends human understanding, inviting believers to approach the Quran with reverence, reflection, and openness to its wisdom rather than attempting to comprehend every layer of its divine design.
