Tafsir (Explanation)

When Musa and Khidr crossed a valley, Musa asked his young servant to bring them their meal (breakfast/lunch), complaining of the fatigue and exhaustion they had endured from their journey. This ayah marks a turning point in the narrative where Musa's servant (Yusha' ibn Nun) discovers that they have passed the location where they were supposed to meet the mysterious wise man, as the fish they had brought along had miraculously found its way back to the sea. According to Ibn Kathir and Al-Tabari, this conversation about food serves as a divine sign indicating they have reached the appointed meeting place with Khidr.

Revelation Context

This ayah is part of the extended narrative of Surah Al-Kahf (ayat 60-82) concerning the story of Musa and Khidr, one of the most profound stories in the Quran. The surah was revealed in Mecca and addresses the theme of hidden divine wisdom and knowledge. This particular moment occurs during their journey as Musa seeks out the servant of Allah who possesses special knowledge, fulfilling the condition set earlier that they would meet when the fish escaped.

Related Hadiths

The story of Musa and Khidr is referenced in Sahih Bukhari (hadith 3400) where the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) narrates this account in detail. Additionally, hadith collections mention that Khidr was one of the servants of Allah chosen for special knowledge, as referenced in various Quranic commentaries with chains of narration from the Companions.
