Tafsir (Explanation)
This ayah presents a rhetorical question asking whether the Prophet should inform the listeners of something worse than the previous mentioned punishment—those upon whom Allah has cursed, expressed His wrath, and transformed some into apes and swine, and those who worship false deities. According to Ibn Kathir and Al-Tabari, this refers to those who rejected Allah's signs and engaged in idolatry, with their spiritual degradation being reflected in these transformations as a sign of divine punishment. The ayah emphasizes that such individuals are in the worst condition both in this life and the hereafter, having strayed furthest from the straight path.
Revelation Context
This ayah is part of Surah Al-Ma'idah's discourse on the Jewish people's rejection of prophets and their violation of the Torah. The context addresses those who rejected the Message and corrupted their faith, serving as a warning to the Muslim community about the consequences of turning away from divine guidance and engaging in idol worship or following false deities.
Related Hadiths
The transformation of people into apes and swine is referenced in multiple surahs (7:166, 2:65). A related hadith in Sahih Muslim states that the Prophet warned against following the ways of previous nations, indicating that similar punishments may befall those who commit similar transgressions.

Key Lesson
This ayah warns believers of the severe consequences of rejecting Allah's guidance and engaging in idolatry or worship of false entities—the punishment extends beyond physical torment to spiritual degradation and complete loss of direction. For modern readers, it serves as a reminder to guard one's faith, reject false ideologies and gods (whether literal idols or materialistic pursuits), and maintain steadfastness on the path of monotheism.
