Tafsir (Explanation)
This ayah records Allah's command to the Prophet (peace be upon him) to leave Walid ibn al-Mughirah alone, whom Allah created with wealth and children but who remained arrogant and rejected faith. Ibn Kathir explains that Allah is instructing the Prophet not to concern himself with those who reject the message despite their apparent blessings, as their accountability rests with Allah alone. Al-Tabari notes that 'wahidan' (alone) emphasizes that Walid was created without excuse—possessing all means of guidance yet choosing disbelief.
Revelation Context
This ayah is part of Surah Al-Muddaththir's opening section, revealed in the early Meccan period. The context involves the Prophet's concern for the disbelievers' guidance, particularly Walid ibn al-Mughirah, a wealthy Meccan who staunchly opposed Islam. The surah consoles the Prophet and redirects his focus, teaching him that not all will believe regardless of the message's clarity.
Related Hadiths
Sahih Bukhari: The Prophet (peace be upon him) was deeply concerned about the disbelievers' guidance, which prompted this revelation reassuring him of his limited responsibility. Related to this is the hadith in Sahih Muslim (196) emphasizing that guidance is from Allah alone: 'Indeed, you do not guide whom you love, but Allah guides whom He wills.'

Key Lesson
This ayah teaches believers that while we must convey the message sincerely, we cannot force faith upon others—our responsibility ends with clear communication, and their response is between them and Allah. It liberates the believer from the emotional burden of others' rejection.
