Tafsir (Explanation)
This ayah commands the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) to glorify and magnify Allah (His Lord). According to Ibn Kathir and Al-Tabari, 'kabbir' (magnify/glorify) refers to exalting Allah through tawhid (monotheism), praise, and acknowledgment of His greatness and majesty. This is a direct divine command emphasizing the primacy of glorifying Allah as the foundation of the prophetic mission.
Revelation Context
This ayah appears in the opening section of Surah Al-Muddaththir, which was revealed after Surah Al-'Alaq as part of the early Meccan period. The surah begins with Allah calling upon the Prophet to rise and warn humanity, and this ayah reinforces that the central message is the glorification of Allah before all else. It establishes the theological foundation for the warning message that follows.
