Tafsir (Explanation)
The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) is commanded to address his Lord, saying: 'O my Lord, if You show me that which they are promised (the punishment).' According to Ibn Kathir and Al-Tabari, this ayah reflects the Prophet's supplication asking Allah to reveal the threatened punishment to the disbelievers so they might believe, or to hasten its arrival as a vindication of his message. The ayah demonstrates the Prophet's patience and reliance on Allah's judgment despite the mockery and denial of the Quraysh.
Revelation Context
This ayah is part of a passage in Surah Al-Mu'minun addressing the disbelievers' rejection and mockery of the Quranic message and the Day of Judgment. It comes in the context of the Meccan period when the Prophet faced intense opposition, and reflects his supplication to Allah regarding those who denied the warning of the Day of Resurrection. The surah emphasizes the believers' characteristics and the certainty of divine punishment for the deniers.
Related Hadiths
While no specific hadith directly addresses this ayah, the general theme relates to Surah Al-Ankabut (29:52) where believers are taught patience in the face of denial. Related is the hadith in Sahih Muslim where the Prophet taught that patience in facing persecution is a virtue of the believers.
Themes
Key Lesson
This ayah teaches believers that when facing mockery or rejection, they should turn to Allah in supplication with patience and trust in His divine wisdom and justice, knowing that ultimate vindication rests with Allah alone. It reminds us that the Prophet himself relied entirely on Allah's will and timing in all matters.

So they will deny you, [disbelievers], in what you say, and you cannot avert [punishment] or [find] help. And whoever commits injustice among you - We will make him taste a great punishment.
And if there was any Qur’ān [i.e., recitation] by which the mountains would be removed or the earth would be broken apart or the dead would be made to speak, [it would be this Qur’ān], but to Allāh belongs the affair entirely. Then have those who believed not accepted that had Allāh willed, He would have guided the people, all of them? And those who disbelieve do not cease to be struck, for what they have done, by calamity - or it will descend near their home - until there comes the promise of Allāh. Indeed, Allāh does not fail in [His] promise.

And those who had wished for his position the previous day began to say, "Oh, how Allāh extends provision to whom He wills of His servants and restricts it! If not that Allāh had conferred favor on us, He would have caused it to swallow us. Oh, how the disbelievers do not succeed!"
