Tafsir (Explanation)
This ayah explains that the hypocrites' hearts have been sealed due to their deliberate rejection of faith after having acknowledged it intellectually. Ibn Kathir notes that their sealing is a consequence of their own choice to abandon truth, resulting in their inability to understand or comprehend the signs of Allah. Al-Qurtubi emphasizes that this sealing represents divine justice—Allah does not seal hearts arbitrarily, but rather as a natural consequence of persistent disbelief and hypocrisy.
Revelation Context
Surah Al-Munafiqun was revealed in Medina during a period when hypocrites (munāfiqūn) were active in the Muslim community, pretending outward faith while harboring disbelief. This ayah specifically addresses the condition of those who had witnessed the truth with the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) yet chose to reject it, contextualizing their spiritual blindness within the broader narrative of hypocrisy in Medina.
Related Hadiths
The Prophet (ﷺ) said: 'When the believer commits a sin, a black spot appears on his heart, and if he repents, it is polished away, but if he continues, it increases until it covers his entire heart.' (Sunan At-Tirmidhi 2642). This hadith complements the ayah's concept of hearts being sealed through continued rejection of truth.

Key Lesson
This ayah reminds us that spiritual hardness and lack of understanding are consequences of our own choices to reject truth, not arbitrary divine punishment. For modern readers, it serves as a warning that persistently ignoring divine guidance can progressively harden the heart, making it increasingly difficult to accept faith—emphasizing the importance of sincere seeking and acceptance of truth while one's heart remains receptive.
