Tafsir (Explanation)
This ayah pronounces severe woe and destruction upon those who reject and deny the signs of Allah and His messengers on the Day of Judgment. Classical scholars like Ibn Kathir emphasize that 'wail' (وَيْلٌ) denotes a valley in Hell and represents the ultimate punishment for disbelief. Al-Tabari notes this ayah serves as a solemn warning repeated throughout Surah Al-Mursalat to reinforce the consequences of denying divine truth.
Revelation Context
Surah Al-Mursalat is a Meccan surah revealed during the period of intense opposition to the Prophet Muhammad's message. This ayah appears within a sequence of powerful warnings about the Day of Judgment, emphasizing that those who consistently reject the message delivered by the emissaries (angels and prophets) will face dire consequences in the Hereafter.
Related Hadiths
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: 'Wail (destruction) is a valley in Hell. The least of its punishments is that it will be as an iron hook placed in one's brain, from which his brain matter flows out.' (Jami' at-Tirmidhi) - This hadith illustrates the severity of 'wail' mentioned in the ayah.
