Al-Mursalat
The Emissaries
Surah Al-Mursalat, meaning "The Emissaries" or "Those Sent Forth," is the 77th chapter of the Quran and consists of 50 verses revealed in Mecca during the early period of Prophet Muhammad's mission. The surah takes its name from the opening verse, which refers to winds or angels sent forth in succession. As a Meccan surah, it was revealed at a time when the Prophet was facing intense opposition from the Quraysh, who rejected the fundamental doctrines of monotheism, prophethood, and especially the resurrection and the Day of Judgment. The surah addresses this denial head-on with powerful, rhythmic language and vivid imagery that is characteristic of the early Meccan revelations, which sought to awaken the spiritual consciousness of a people deeply entrenched in materialism and idolatry. The dominant theme of Surah Al-Mursalat is the reality and certainty of the Day of Judgment, and the surah is most distinguished by its striking refrain, "Woe, that Day, to the deniers!" (*Waylun yawma'idhin lil-mukadhdhibeen*), which is repeated ten times throughout the chapter, serving as a powerful rhetorical device that hammers home the gravity of rejecting divine truth. The surah opens with a series of oaths invoking natural and cosmic phenomena—winds that scatter, storms that blow violently, and forces that spread and distinguish—all pointing to the overwhelming power and purposeful design of God's creation. It then transitions into a description of the terrifying events of the Last Day: the stars will be extinguished, the sky will be torn apart, the mountains will be scattered like dust, and the messengers will be gathered to testify. These apocalyptic scenes are presented not merely as distant prophecies but as inevitable certainties, contrasting the permanence of divine promise with the fleeting arrogance of those who deny it. The surah also draws upon historical references, reminding the listeners of the fate of earlier nations who rejected their prophets and were subsequently destroyed. Without naming specific peoples in detail, it alludes to the destruction of former generations as evidence that God's justice is not idle and that denial of the truth carries real, catastrophic consequences. This serves as both a warning to the Quraysh and a consolation to the Prophet and the early believers who were suffering persecution. The surah then pivots to reflect on God's creative power and blessings—the creation of human beings from humble fluid, the fashioning of the earth as a dwelling place with firm mountains and flowing rivers, and the provision of fresh water—all presented as signs that should naturally lead a reflective person to acknowledge the Creator and accept
By those [winds] sent forth in gusts
And the winds that blow violently
And [by] the winds that spread [clouds]
And those [angels] who bring criterion
And those [angels] who deliver a message.
As justification or warning,
Indeed, what you are promised is to occur.
So when the stars are obliterated
And when the heaven is opened
And when the mountains are blown away
And when the messengers' time has come...
For what Day was it postponed?
For the Day of Judgement.
And what can make you know what is the Day of Judgement?
Woe, that Day, to the deniers.
Did We not destroy the former peoples?
Then We will follow them with the later ones.
Thus do We deal with the criminals.
Woe, that Day, to the deniers.
Did We not create you from a liquid disdained?
And We placed it in a firm lodging [i.e., the womb]
For a known extent.
And We determined [it], and excellent [are We] to determine.
Woe, that Day, to the deniers.
Have We not made the earth a container
Of the living and the dead?
And We placed therein lofty, firmly set mountains and have given you to drink sweet water.
Woe, that Day, to the deniers.
[They will be told], "Proceed to that which you used to deny.
Proceed to a shadow [of smoke] having three columns.
[But having] no cool shade and availing not against the flame."
Indeed, it throws sparks [as huge] as a fortress,
As if they were yellowish [black] camels.
Woe, that Day, to the deniers.
This is a Day they will not speak,
Nor will it be permitted for them to make an excuse.
Woe, that Day, to the deniers.
This is the Day of Judgement; We will have assembled you and the former peoples.
So if you have a plan, then plan against Me.
Woe, that Day, to the deniers.
Indeed, the righteous will be among shades and springs
And fruits from whatever they desire,
[Being told], "Eat and drink in satisfaction for what you used to do."
Indeed, We thus reward the doers of good.
Woe, that Day, to the deniers.
[O disbelievers], eat and enjoy yourselves a little; indeed, you are criminals.
Woe, that Day, to the deniers.
And when it is said to them, "Bow [in prayer]," they do not bow.
Woe, that Day, to the deniers.
Then in what statement after it [i.e., the Qur’ān] will they believe?
