Tafsir (Explanation)
This ayah states that the disbelievers will be veiled (prevented) from seeing their Lord on the Day of Judgment as a punishment for their rejection and sins. Classical scholars like Ibn Kathir and Al-Qurtubi emphasize that this 'hijab' (veil) represents the greatest punishment after the torment of Hell itself, as the believers will be granted the vision of Allah's face while the disbelievers are denied this supreme honor. The ayah serves as a solemn warning about the consequences of denying Allah's signs and defrauding others, themes central to Surah Al-Mutaffifin.
Revelation Context
Surah Al-Mutaffifin addresses those who engage in fraud and dishonesty in commerce and daily dealings. This particular ayah concludes a section emphasizing the ultimate consequence of such behavior and disbelief—separation from Allah's mercy and sight on the Day of Judgment, reinforcing the surah's theme of divine justice and accountability.
Related Hadiths
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: 'You will see your Lord just as you see the full moon' (Sahih Bukhari, Sahih Muslim), contrasting the believers' vision of Allah with the veiling described in this ayah for disbelievers. Additionally, the hadith about the 'Hijab' between Allah and the disbelievers in Surah Al-A'raf (7:46) provides thematic resonance.
