The Defrauding

Surah Al-Mutaffifin, the eighty-third chapter of the Quran, consisting of thirty-six verses, is widely regarded as one of the later Meccan surahs, though some scholars have suggested it may have been revealed in the early Medinan period, particularly given its opening theme addressing commercial dishonesty. The surah derives its name from its very first verse, which opens with a stern warning—"Woe to the defrauders"—referring to those who cheat in weights and measures, demanding full measure when they receive goods from others but giving less than what is due when they measure or weigh for others. This opening theme addresses a deeply entrenched social vice that was prevalent in pre-Islamic Arabian society, where merchants frequently exploited buyers through fraudulent trade practices. However, the surah quickly expands beyond the literal act of commercial cheating to encompass a broader spiritual and moral principle: the concept of accountability before God and the fundamental dishonesty of those who live as though they will never face divine judgment. The rhetorical question posed in the surah—"Do they not think that they will be resurrected for a tremendous Day, a Day when mankind will stand before the Lord of all worlds?"—serves as the moral fulcrum upon which the entire chapter turns, linking worldly dishonesty to a deeper denial of the Hereafter. The surah then transitions into a vivid contrast between the fates of the wicked and the righteous, employing the imagery of two cosmic registers. The record of the wicked, referred to as the "Sijjeen," is described as a written record placed in the lowest depths, a term that evokes confinement and degradation, symbolizing the spiritual imprisonment of those who persist in sin and denial. The surah warns that those who deny the Day of Judgment are none other than transgressors and sinners who, when the verses of God are recited to them, dismiss them as "legends of the ancients." One of the most psychologically penetrating verses in this passage declares that their hearts have been covered with rust—a corrosion caused by their persistent sinful behavior—so that they are sealed off from recognizing truth. In stark and beautiful contrast, the record of the righteous is called the "Illiyyun," placed in the most exalted heights, witnessed by those brought near to God. This literary juxtaposition between Sijjeen and Illiyyun creates a powerful moral architecture, illustrating how human choices in this world correspond to eternal stations in the next. The closing passages of the surah paint an evocative picture of the rewards awaiting the righteous in Paradise—sealed nectar, flavored with musk, mixed with the waters of Tasnim, a spring from

Sahih International

Who, when they take a measure from people, take in full.

Sahih International

But if they give by measure or by weight to them, they cause loss.

Sahih International

Do they not think that they will be resurrected

Sahih International

The Day when mankind will stand before the Lord of the worlds?

Sahih International

No! Indeed, the record of the wicked is in sijjeen.

Sahih International

And none deny it except every sinful transgressor.

Sahih International

When Our verses are recited to him, he says, "Legends of the former peoples."

Sahih International

No! Rather, the stain has covered their hearts of that which they were earning.

Sahih International

No! Indeed, from their Lord, that Day, they will be partitioned.

Sahih International

Then indeed, they will [enter and] burn in Hellfire.

Sahih International

Then it will be said [to them], "This is what you used to deny."

Sahih International

No! Indeed, the record of the righteous is in ʿilliyyūn.

Sahih International

And what can make you know what is ʿilliyyūn?

Sahih International

You will recognize in their faces the radiance of pleasure.

Sahih International

They will be given to drink [pure] wine [which was] sealed.

Sahih International

The last of it is musk. So for this let the competitors compete.

Sahih International

A spring from which those near [to Allāh] drink.

Sahih International

Indeed, those who committed crimes used to laugh at those who believed.

Sahih International

And when they passed by them, they would exchange derisive glances.

Sahih International

And when they returned to their people, they would return jesting.

Sahih International

And when they saw them, they would say, "Indeed, those are truly lost."

Sahih International

But they had not been sent as guardians over them.

Sahih International

So Today those who believed are laughing at the disbelievers,

Sahih International

Have the disbelievers [not] been rewarded [this Day] for what they used to do?
