Tafsir (Explanation)

This ayah emphasizes that the Quran is a reminder and admonition for all humanity, and whoever wishes may take the path toward their Lord through obedience and righteousness. Classical scholars like Ibn Kathir and Al-Tabari interpret this as affirming human free will—Allah has provided clear guidance, but the choice to follow it rests with each individual. The ayah concludes Surah Al-Muzzammil with a powerful message that faith and the path to Allah are accessible to those who sincerely desire them.

Revelation Context

This ayah appears at the conclusion of Surah Al-Muzzammil, which was revealed early in the Meccan period during intense opposition to the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). The surah addresses the Prophet and believers, emphasizing night vigil and Quranic recitation. This final ayah serves as a universal proclamation that despite persecution, the Quranic message remains a clear reminder and invitation to all people to seek proximity to Allah.

Related Hadiths

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: 'The best of you are those who learn the Quran and teach it' (Sahih Bukhari 5027), relating to the Quran's role as a reminder. Additionally, 'Whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day, let him speak good or remain silent' (Sahih Muslim 47) reflects the personal choice emphasized in this ayah regarding accepting guidance.
