The Enshrouded One

Surah Al-Muzzammil, meaning "The Enshrouded One" or "The One Wrapped in Garments," is the 73rd chapter of the Quran and consists of 20 verses revealed primarily in the early Meccan period, with the final verse widely regarded by scholars as having been revealed later in Madinah. The surah takes its name from its opening address to the Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, who was found wrapped in his garments, likely during a moment of spiritual intensity or contemplation in the early days of revelation. The surah begins with a divine command for the Prophet to rise during the night and engage in prolonged prayer and the measured, deliberate recitation of the Quran, establishing the practice of tahajjud (night prayer) as a foundational spiritual discipline. This emphasis on night vigil reflects the broader theme that the weight of the prophetic mission requires deep spiritual preparation, and that the stillness and solitude of the night provide a uniquely powerful environment for communion with God. Allah describes the night hours as a time when the heart and tongue are most aligned, making worship during this period especially potent and formative for the soul. Beyond the personal spiritual training of the Prophet, the surah addresses the broader reality of his mission and the opposition he faced from the Quraysh of Mecca. Allah instructs the Prophet to bear patiently the hostility and mockery of those who reject the message, entrusting their ultimate judgment to God alone. The surah contains a powerful warning to the disbelievers, drawing a parallel with the story of Pharaoh, who rejected the Prophet Musa (Moses) and was subsequently destroyed by divine punishment. This brief but striking narrative reference serves as both a consolation to the Prophet and a stern admonition to the leaders of Quraysh, reminding them that God's retribution for those who oppose His messengers is both certain and severe. The surah also paints a vivid eschatological picture of the Day of Judgment, describing a day so catastrophic that the sky will be torn apart and the mountains will crumble to dust, imagery meant to awaken a sense of urgency and moral seriousness in its listeners. The spiritual lessons of Surah Al-Muzzammil are rich and enduring. At its heart, the surah teaches that a life of outward mission and service must be rooted in inner devotion, discipline, and reliance upon God. The commandments to pray at night, recite the Quran with care and reflection, remember God's name with complete devotion, and place full trust in Him as the Lord of all creation establish a holistic model of spiritual life that balances contemplation with action. The surah also teaches the

Indeed, this is a reminder, so whoever wills may take to his Lord a way.

Indeed, your Lord knows, [O Muḥammad], that you stand [in prayer] almost two thirds of the night or half of it or a third of it, and [so do] a group of those with you. And Allāh determines [the extent of] the night and the day. He has known that you [Muslims] will not be able to do it and has turned to you in forgiveness, so recite what is easy [for you] of the Qur’ān. He has known that there will be among you those who are ill and others traveling throughout the land seeking [something] of the bounty of Allāh and others fighting for the cause of Allāh. So recite what is easy from it and establish prayer and give zakāh and loan Allāh a goodly loan. And whatever good you put forward for yourselves - you will find it with Allāh. It is better and greater in reward. And seek forgiveness of Allāh. Indeed, Allāh is Forgiving and Merciful.
