Tafsir (Explanation)

This ayah describes the Day of Judgment when Allah will call upon the people and ask them: 'What response did you give to the messengers?' According to Ibn Kathir and Al-Tabari, this is a profound interrogation meant to remind humanity of their accountability for rejecting or accepting the divine guidance brought by the prophets. The question emphasizes that ignoring, denying, or failing to heed the messengers is a grave sin for which people will be held responsible before Allah.

Revelation Context

This ayah appears within Surah Al-Qasas, which was revealed in Mecca during the period of intense opposition to the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). The surah repeatedly emphasizes Allah's power, the stories of previous prophets and their nations, and the inevitability of the Day of Judgment. This particular ayah reinforces the theme that every nation received messengers and bears responsibility for their response to divine guidance.

Related Hadiths

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: 'Every prophet was sent to his people exclusively, but I have been sent to all of mankind' (Sahih Bukhari 334). Additionally, in Surah As-Sajdah 32:3, there is mention of people being questioned about their response to the messengers, which is thematically related to accountability on the Day of Judgment.
