There is, at its occurrence, no denial.
Transliteration
Laysa li-waqʿatihā kādhibah
Tafsir (Explanation)
This ayah affirms the absolute certainty of the Hour (Day of Judgment), stating that there is no falsehood or doubt regarding its occurrence. Classical scholars like Ibn Kathir and Al-Tabari emphasize that 'waqʿah' (the inevitable event) refers to the Day of Judgment, and the negation 'laysa...kādhibah' (there is no lie/false claim) stresses its inevitable reality with absolute certainty. This serves as a powerful affirmation to the Meccan disbelievers who rejected the concept of resurrection and accountability.
Revelation Context
Surah Al-Waqi'ah was revealed in Mecca during a period when the Quraysh denied the resurrection and mocked the concept of the Day of Judgment. This ayah appears at the very beginning of the surah (verse 2) as part of Allah's strong opening assertion about the certainty of the Hour, directly addressing the disbelievers' denials and establishing the surah's central theme.
Related Hadiths
The Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) said: 'The Hour will be established and none will believe except those who did not see it' (Sunan Ibn Majah). This hadith reinforces the concept presented in this ayah about the certainty and inevitability of the Day of Judgment despite disbelief.
