Tafsir (Explanation)

This ayah affirms that the Qur'an is indeed a noble and honored book, emphasizing its dignity, purity, and sacred status. Classical scholars like Ibn Kathir interpret 'karim' (noble/generous) to mean that the Qur'an is precious in its content, protected from corruption, and generous in its guidance and blessings to humanity. Al-Tabari notes that this declaration serves to reinforce the Qur'an's authenticity and worth as divine revelation, countering any doubts about its source or value.

Revelation Context

This ayah appears near the conclusion of Surah Al-Waqi'ah, which is a Meccan surah that addresses themes of the Day of Judgment and divine sovereignty. The statement comes within the broader context of verses (56:75-96) where Allah swears oaths about the Qur'an's truthfulness and majesty, serving as a powerful closing testimony to the Qur'an's authenticity during a period when the Meccan polytheists were rejecting the Prophet's message.
