Tafsir (Explanation)
These are the Muqatta'at (disjointed letters) that open Surah Ali 'Imran, and their precise meaning is known only to Allah. Classical scholars like Ibn Kathir and Al-Tabari discuss various interpretations: some believe they represent divine mysteries, others suggest they serve as a rhetorical device to capture attention, and still others propose they are abbreviations for divine names or attributes. The letters appear at the beginning of 29 surahs in the Quran, and their purpose is ultimately part of the unseen knowledge ('ilm al-ghayb) that belongs exclusively to Allah.
Revelation Context
Surah Ali 'Imran is a Medinan surah revealed during the second and third years after the Hijrah. It was revealed during a period of significant theological and military challenges, including the Battle of Uhud. The opening disjointed letters serve as an introduction to a surah that addresses fundamental matters of Islamic faith, the People of the Book, and the story of the family of 'Imran (including Mary and Jesus).
